Archbishop Allen Vigneron wrote that the ministry of Lector is a sacred and vital ministry within the Christian community. The proclaiming of the Word of God is a message essential to the life the Church and the spiritual nourishment of the eucharistic assembly.
It is the Lector's privilege and responsibility is to proclaim the Word of God at the parish celebration of the Eucharist.
Pope Benedict XVI wrote in Verbum Domini: The sacramentality of the word can thus be understood by analogy with the real presence of Christ under the appearances of the consecrated bread and wine. By approaching the altar and partaking in the eucharistic banquet we truly share in the body and blood of Christ. The proclamation of God's word at the celebration entails an acknowledgment that Christ himself is present, that he speaks to us, and that he wishes to be heard.
The number of times a lector is scheduled depends on lector availability, Mass
preference, and the number of active lectors on the roster. Training sessions are provided to prepare new lectors and to make good lectors even better.
Preparing for Sunday liturgies has the personal reward of a deeper understanding and love of the Scriptures.
